What is the Cooperative Education/Internship?

The Cooperative Education/Internship is supervised placement in a community criminal justice agency or on a criminal justice research project. Evaluations of students are completed by agency staff and/or University faculty. For students who schedules do not allow for an in-person agency internship, a career-oriented fully online “professional development” course is an alternative. Textbooks are available and can be bought online through the Portland State bookstore. All other materials (if there is no charge) will be available online or forwarded to you through the mail.

Of course, this is individually based and varies with the number of courses you take. On an average, 10-20 hours per week will ensure completion of 8-12 credits per quarter on time. The amount of study hours is directly related to the number of courses taken per term.

What are the computer requirements for participation in the criminology and criminal justice program?

Do I earn the same degree that on-campus students earn?

Yes. Portland State University awards the same accredited bachelor degree regardless of the delivery method. Regardless of how you take the program, (the traditional campus-based program or the distance learning program for working professionals), both diplomas are exactly the same. There is no distinction made for online or on-campus.

I am not computer savvy; can I do this?

Yes. We realize that many students are computer novices; therefore, Portland State University provides technical support and a full-time Program Manager that will be your personal guide throughout the program. As a new student, you will have an orientation to online courses prior to starting classes.

I have a busy work and family life and cannot attend classes each week. Is this program for me?

Yes. You can complete your criminology and criminal justice degree requirements at your convenience in the comfort of your own home or workplace. There are no site visits or campus meetings to attend. You have access to your course 24 hours a day. Your coursework can be completed around your busy schedule.
